CPUC Issues Report on Limousine Companies
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the state agency that oversees limousine services and other for-hire transportation companies, recently released its summary of enforcement actions against ground transportation companies for the first quarter of 2011. The CPUC enforces regulations, issues licenses and oversees around 5,000 limousine services in our state, including NLS Limo, the premier San Francisco limousine service.
Soccer Fans Trash Party Bus After Match
A group of fans from a rival team attacked a party bus transporting a group of English soccer fans recently after an important tournament. The party bus was carrying a group of fans of the Manchester City soccer club after their FA Cup semifinal match with archrival Manchester United when it needed to stop for gas. While the driver was filling up the tank, a rowdy group of United fans surrounded the vehicle and began throwing bottles of antifreeze from an outside display nearby. They then began kicking the party bus, smashing the windshield and kicking in the side panels where luggage is often stored.
Nevada Considering Bills to Make Driverless Cars Legal
Here’s a story that caught our eye. It may not pertain to luxury vehicles, but, as unapologetic car nuts, we thought it was worthy of mention. We also think it’s worthy of condemnation! Reports out of Nevada claim that search engine giant Google has hired a lobbyist to press Nevada lawmakers to pass two bills currently under review. If passed, they would make Nevada the first place on the planet where driverless cars are legal.
Georgia Officials Protecting Prom Goers From Illegal Limo Operators
If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you may remember a story from last month about a group of Georgia prom goers who were stranded and had their prom ruined by an illegal and unethical limousine service. In the wake of that incident, officials with the Georgia Public Service Commission are working with the Atlanta Police Department to conduct spot checks of limousines, party buses and other luxury vehicles on prom nights. The checks are intended to safeguard kids from illegal limo operators who do not have required insurance coverage, proper licensing and registration of drivers and vehicles.

The first “Prom to Remember” was held at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Cleveland, and, judging by the popularity of the event and the glowing smiles of the attendees, it is very likely that this will become an annual event.

Illegal Limousines Crushed and Shredded By English Watchdog Agency
In an unusual move certainly intended to be a warning to illegal limousine operators, the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA), which is the agency that regulates the limousine industry in the United Kingdom, recently seized, crushed and shredded two luxury limousines. The Ford Excursion SUV limousines were seized from an illegal limousine operator in South Wales because they did not meet VOSA safety regulations and were transporting passengers illegally. The agency that registers, licenses and oversees San Francisco limousines and other limo services in California is the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). While they have not yet taken drastic steps like VOSA to address illegal limo operators, this might give them some ideas.
