Cancer Patients Enjoy Special Prom and Party Bus Transportation
Some Cleveland, Ohio teens were treated to a very special prom recently, which included prom transportation on a party bus, a nice dinner, complimentary dresses, tuxedos and flowers and other treats to make the evening extra special. These teens are part of a special group of people; each is battling cancer or is the date or parent of a teen battling cancer. The first “Prom to Remember” was held at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Cleveland, and, judging by the popularity of the event and the glowing smiles of the attendees, it is very likely that this will become an annual event.
The coordinator of the special prom, Jane Knausz, said she got the idea from her daughter in Florida. “She worked on a committee down there and told me all about it. We just thought this is something we can do in Ohio,” said Jane.
The prom teens are all from NE Ohio, and they are patients currently receiving treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and Akron Children’s Hospital. The coordinator and parents of the teens thought it would be nice if the teens could have a night where they could forget about their health problems, have some fun and simply enjoy each other’s company. According to the kids, these goals were met and surpassed.
“It’s like intense. It feels like we’re in a movie,” said Lexi Hodges, whose cancer is currently in remission.
Every aspect of the event from the transportation to the dinner to the formal wear and much more was provided free as organizers felt these kids and their families are going through an extraordinarily difficult time and deserve a break. They also understand that cancer treatment is quite expensive and families often endure profound financial hardships to provide care for their kids.
“When you’re going through cancer treatment, you may have insurance but you still have a lot of out of pocket expenses,” said Knausz.
When asked about their favorite part of the evening, each teen had a slightly different take.
One attendee said, “I really liked picking out the dress and getting on a party bus. I’ve never been on one before.”
“My favorite part was shoe shopping,” added another.
“I love walking down the red carpet,” said one happy young lady.
One teen summed up the feelings of all the teens who craved a sense of normalcy in their lives.
“It makes me feel normal. When I first got sick I felt like an outcast and it makes me feel like a normal kid again,” said Lexi Hodges.
