Things To Do | San Francisco Travel Blog - Part 43
Point Reyes’ 36 Annual Big Time Festival
Given the foundational role that Native American culture and heritage played in the development of our country and the exploration of the American landscape, it is important that we honor and recognize their traditions, rites, and practices. All too often it is easy to forget that our ancestors did not arrive at an empty continent, and that the survival of our relatives often times depended on the help of the native population.
2016 Shape Tech Expo in San Francisco
It is no secret that the tech world has come to consider San Francisco something of an elite headquarters. With Google, Twitter, and Facebook all within close range, it makes the city home to countless techies, coders, and designers who either work for these firms or are hoping to make it big with an enterprising startup of their own. While the negative aspects of this techno-takeover are widely being debated throughout the Bay Area’s many papers and magazines, there are also many positive elements to this situation. One of these positives is happening this Friday and Saturday (July 15th and 16th) at San Francisco’s AT&T Park: the AT&T Park Shape Tech Expo.
Immersive Pop-Up Dinner in San Francisco
Our Bay Area blog has often devoted space to the Bay Area’s wealth of food options and gourmet eateries. Whether it is a walk along Fisherman’s Wharf or a late-night bite in the Tenderloin District, San Francisco’s foodie scene is thriving, and all you need to do is go out for a meal at one of the many award-winning restaurants in the area to understand why. This Friday, the 8th of June, several of San Francisco’s top chefs are joining forces to put on a special, multimedia food event. Centering around the rich heritage of Native Americans, Chef Caesare Assad and Chef Loretta Barrett Oden will be implementing various techniques endemic to Capay Valley and Native American cooking to present guests with a one-of-a-kind culinary experience.
Old-Fashioned Independence Day Celebration in Santa Cruz
This Independence Day, consider doing something out of the ordinary. Instead of the cacophony of music and fireworks to be found in most locations throughout the Bay Area, the Wilder Ranch State Park is holding their Old-Fashioned Independence Day celebration. Just two miles south of Santa Cruz, Wilder Ranch State Park is a beautiful and quiet park with plenty of sprawling lawns for you and your family to come and relax before heading back into the city.
Fourth of July Waterfront Festival
The Fourth of July holds a place of honor in our vast country, and every year we find ourselves outdoing previous years in our vivacity and spirit when it comes to celebrating our independence from Britain. Of course we all celebrate in our own fashion, but in larger cities, the bang is the biggest and the events are memorable in ways that a quiet night at home toasting ourselves simply cannot match. In San Francisco, the same rules apply.
San Francisco’s Fillmore Jazz Festival
San Francisco’s legendary relationship with art and culture bursts through all subterfuge during the summer months. As we have written about on this blog, there are festivals, street fairs, and markets almost every day of the week, and the weekends are packed with cultural offerings. Well, forgive us for adding one more event to the already massive pile. This weekend, on July 2nd and 3rd from 10am to 6pm, the Fillmore Jazz Festival will return to the streets of San Francisco, turning one of the most well-known districts into a sanctuary for jazz and jazz lovers of all stripes.
The 33rd Annual San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival
Do you like wine? Then head down to San Anselmo this weekend for the 33rd consecutive San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival. This popular event always proves itself to be one of the most widely attended in Northern California, drawing well over 30,000 wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs during its two-day stretch every year. As you may have guessed from its name, the San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival is about more than just the wine. Visitors will be brought into the heart of scenic and historic San Anselmo, where the parks and tree-lined avenues are rivaled only by the numerous historical locations and boutiques.
Treasure Island Flea
Unofficially known as “The Festival of the Bay,” Treasure Island Flea is a monthly arts celebration that takes place on the last Saturday and Sunday of any given month throughout the year on Treasure Island in San Francisco. What began as a chance for local artists, craftspeople, and creative weirdos to gather and support one another has blossomed into a carnivalesque bazaar, where some of the most unique and talented members of the Bay Area community come together and ply their wares.
Woodies on the Wharf in Santa Cruz
For 22 years, summertime along the Santa Cruz Wharf has meant Woodies on the Wharf. This year, the classic event of classic cars starts on Thursday, June 23rd, with a special welcome party at home of Alan and Jule Hilton for members of the Santa Crus Woodie Club and all Woodie owners who are participating in the show. Friday, the 24th, will feature more members only events such as an Open House Breakfast, paddle boat adventures, and yoga hosted by Jim and Patty Ferdinand.
Northern California Pirate Festival
Finally, after a year of waiting, the Northern California Pirate Festival returns to Vallejo for its 10th year of swashbuckling, scurvy-doggery, and, of course, scallywagging. Held at the Vallejo Waterfront Park, the Pirate Festival is only a short ride away from San Francisco and promises to be some of the most fun you are going to have all summer.
