RSSWoodies on the Wharf in Santa Cruz
For 22 years, summertime along the Santa Cruz Wharf has meant Woodies on the Wharf. This year, the classic event of classic cars starts on Thursday, June 23rd, with a special welcome party at home of Alan and Jule Hilton for members of the Santa Crus Woodie Club and all Woodie owners who are participating in the show. Friday, the 24th, will feature more members only events such as an Open House Breakfast, paddle boat adventures, and yoga hosted by Jim and Patty Ferdinand.
After that, all are welcome to the free Welcome Party that the SCWC is throwing at the Ocean Pacific! From 3:00 until 6:00, visitors and guests will enjoy refreshments and appetizers served beside the pool, with prizes going to winners in the 3rd annual Wacky-Tacky Hawaiian Shirt, Mumu, and Flip Flop contest. Coming to the Welcome Party is also a fantastic way to purchase tickets for the tailgate dinner taking place on Saturday night. The menu is “South of the Border” themed, so get ready for crunchy tacos and salsa verde. But Friday doesn’t end there. After the dinner, all are invited to make their way over to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk for a free concert by the international sensation Blue Oyster Cult.
Woodies on the Wharf itself begins on Saturday, June 25th, and features over 200 restored and lacquered woodies that are guaranteed to launch you back to the 50s, when Jan & Dean were a band and “cherry” was an adjective. The show is completely free, so you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the sea and inspect the vehicles to your heart’s content. Surrounding the cars will be the wharf’s famous shops and restaurants, while off in the distance the unparalleled views of the coast will dazzle your eyes. Surf City, here we come indeed.
The show goes from 10 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon, which is the time when the parade begins. All of the cars you have just spent the past five-and-a-half hours ogling will line up to form an armada of Woodies, with plenty of revving engines and honking horns to make the atmosphere complete. After the parade is completed, the tailgate dinner can begin. All ticket holders (remember, buy these at the Welcome Party) are invited to join the Woodies in the Ocean Pacific Lodge’s parking lot for a potluck dinner complete with live music and a raffle.
