Things To Do | San Francisco Travel Blog - Part 51
Sea Lions at Pier 39
If you’ve only lived in the Bay Area for a decade or two, you might take the Sea Lions at Pier 39 for granted. This year, San Francisco will celebrate the lions 26th anniversary! Not long after the devastating earthquake of 1989, these beautiful creatures started dropping by the Fisherman’s Wharf. Today they are considered icons of the West Coast.
San Francisco Beer Week
It’s that time of year again! No, we don’t mean Valentine’s Day, nor are we referring to Superbowl Sunday. Rather, we’re thinking about San Francisco Beer Week. Hops enthusiasts and lager lovers alike travel from near and far to partake in these delicious craft drinks. From January 22nd through January 23rd, 2016, this celebration will be the talk of the Bay.
Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon and 5K
We admit it. We’re feeling it, too. The holidays are not always kind to one’s physique. While we’re at it, we’ll say this: year round, we love living within walking and driving distances to some of the world’s finest food and beverage establishments.
Satchmo at the Waldorf
Miles Davis. Herbie Hancock. Dave Brubeck. These are some of the jazz greats we most admire. Louis Armstrong, however, just might be our all-time favorite. Do you know how he earned his nickname, “Satchmo”? What do you know about Armstrong’s final performances? Are you familiar with his world-renowned sets at the Warldorf Astoria Hotel? From January 13th through February 7th of 2016, A.C.T.’s Geary Theater will be hosting a truly unique performance, Satchmo at the Warldorf.
Hot Chocolate To Go Run
Some Bay Area transplants miss their snow-bunny days. Perhaps you have fond memories of bundling up in your favorite snowsuit and heading up the mountain for a day of exercise on the slopes? Of course, you followed your skiing, snowboarding, and/or sledding extravaganzas by partaking in seasonal drinks such as hot cocoa. Did you know that there’s an urban San Francisco equivalent of your favorite winter activities?
Aubergine at the Berkeley Rep
When was the last time that you spent an evening at the theatre? Whether you have season tickets to one of the finest venues in the Greater Bay Area, or you haven’t attended a show in far too long, Aubergine, which will be showcased via the Berkeley Rep in Berkeley, California, is a performance that shouldn’t be missed. Aubergine will be playing at Peet’s Theatre at 2025 Addision from February 5th of 2016 through March 20th of 2016.
Bay Area Christmas Caroling
Are you disappointed by how quickly the holiday season has snuck up on us? Part of what makes the most wonderful time of the year so lovely is the anticipation of dozens of heartwarming Christmas activities. From reenactments of the nativity scene to visits with Santa Claus, we look forward to yearly traditions. San Francisco, however, is a bustling and affluent area, and Bay Area residents are busy as usual. Amongst both personal and professional commitments, it can be difficult to fit in traditions, even the holiday activities that we adore most. Despite it being the month of December, it’s not too late to organize and execute your 2015 Christmas celebrations.
The 16th Annual Edwardian Ball Returns to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom
The internationally-acclaimed Edwardian Ball returns to San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom this January for their 16th annual celebration of the late cult author, comic artist, illustrator and cartoonist Edward Gorey. The whimsical two-day festival, often referred to as the #1 steampunk event in the world, is described by SFWeekly as, "Vintage Fetish meets circus theatrics meets industrial arts mayhem," and by 944 Magazine as “an over-the-top, colorful, quirky, eccentric, whimsical-yet-elegant costume party.”
International Street Food Cooking Class
Do you love to travel and explore new cuisines? Are you always trying the latest and greatest food truck? Then you don’t want to miss Parties That Cook’s International Street Food cooking class, which takes place at their North Beach kitchen on January 8th. In this hands-on cooking class, they’ll teach you how to prepare an array of savory and sweet street food favorites from around the world.
The Chinese New Year in San Francisco
With the largest Chinese neighborhood in the United States, it’s no wonder that there is no better place to be (except for maybe, China) than San Francisco to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We already blogged about several holiday activities you don’t want to miss this year in San Fran, but the beauty of the Chinese New Year is that it brightens up those pesky months after the Holiday season where the chilly weather lingers and everything gets kind of gray and mushy. The month-long celebration sprinkles events from the end of January to late February, to keep you in good spirits through the dreary after-Holiday months. Here are the list of events for the Chinese New Year in 2016 – the year of the Monkey.
