Satchmo at the Waldorf
Miles Davis. Herbie Hancock. Dave Brubeck. These are some of the jazz greats we most admire. Louis Armstrong, however, just might be our all-time favorite. Do you know how he earned his nickname, “Satchmo”? What do you know about Armstrong’s final performances? Are you familiar with his world-renowned sets at the Warldorf Astoria Hotel? From January 13th through February 7th of 2016, A.C.T.’s Geary Theater will be hosting a truly unique performance, Satchmo at the Warldorf.
Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans in August of 1901, and he passed away almost seventy years later in New York City. During his iconic decades in the music scene, this man’s influence within the genres of jazz, Dixieland, swing, scat, and more were inarguably some of the most valuable contributions to American music ever. He played cornet and, more famously, trumpet, and during the later years of his life, his gritty yet soulful vocals became immediately recognizable to any American who owned a radio. Armstrong’s melodies were delicately lyrical, his technical abilities were show stopping, and his musical theories were inventive and quite literally genre bending. Whether you refer to him as Pops, Satchmo, or simply your “favorite jazz artist,” Louis Armstrong remains a cultural and musical legend.
We’ll never have the honor of witnessing the man himself, and this is heartbreaking. Therefore, Satchmo at the Waldorf is a must-see theatre show. Remember jazz legend Louis Armstrong via a night of entertainment. The performance will offer an intimate look at the struggles, passions, and everything else that make this late musical virtuoso a true icon.
