Laurel Street Fair
Everyone in San Francisco knows that Oakland is one of the hottest and most up-and-coming places for the arts (and affordable housing). Bay Area locals looking for memorable and genuine cultural experiences will often cross over to Oakland to soak up the electric atmosphere, delicious foods, and explosive artistic scene that bubbles up from every street corner of this city. On Saturday, August 13th, visitors to Oakland will have the added bonus of experiencing the 2016 Laurel Street Fair, one of the largest and most popular events in the East Bay area, and a party that draws upwards of 8,000 people into its loving embrace.
Fremont Festival of the Arts
The Fremont Festival of the Arts is one of the hottest and most heavily attended arts festivals in the country. Known colloquially as the biggest free outdoor festival west of the Mississippi, the Fremont Festival of the Arts covers over four miles of Downtown Fremont with art, music, food, drink, activities for kids, and fun for everyone from the smallest in your family to the biggest.

2016 Beer Olympics
The Olympics are fast approaching, and all around the world people are gearing up for the frenzy of nationalism and competitiveness that will descend like a meteor onto Brazil this summer. Those of us who are staying in San Francisco during the festivities will, of course, be gathering in small groups to watch the drama unfold on our televisions, and maybe we will wander down to a local bar to engage in the camaraderie that the Olympics invoke in us, but usually there’s not much more involvement than that.
Treasure Island Flea: “Hawaii in July”
The Treasure Island Flea returns this month to the Great Lawn, along the Avenue of the Palms in San Francisco. The Flea, for those of you who missed our last entry on the subject, takes place on the last weekend of every month, and usually revolves around some sort of unique theme or series of events that ties the whole thing together. In June, the Flea featured a retro circus as well as a beard competition. This month, from the 30th to the 31st, the Flea is back, and it’s a good time to break out your swimsuits and flip-flops because the theme for this weekend is Hawaii in July.
Art Night Kick-Off in San Francisco
Art and San Francisco go together like ketchup and hotdogs. For art lovers looking for a fix, there are the obvious places like the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and SFMoMA, and then there are the scads of galleries that are impossible to avoid (and why would you want to?) as well as the numerous festivals, parties, and celebrations that are art centered. One can never have too much of a thing this good, and so it is to our delight that this year there is a new event that will be bringing together all varieties of artistic endeavor. On Friday, July 29th, from 5:00pm until 9:00pm at the UN Plaza (at the intersection of Market and Hyde Streets), Art Night will be kicking off its first ever season.
This Weekend in San Francisco: The Murray Invitational
What can we say about Bill Murray that hasn’t been said thousands of times already? We know about his antics (sneaking up to people in Central Park, putting his hands over their eyes, and when they turn around saying, “nobody will ever believe you”), and we know about his movies. We can’t help but love him because we appreciate the way he transcends every expectation we hold for celebrities and maintains his humanness. Bill Murray has become something of an adjective, something we strive to become in the same way we want to become generous or humble. In San Francisco, these feelings have congealed into one marvelous event: The Murray Invitational.
