Vallejo

An interesting city full of things to do, Vallejo, CA is a part of Solano County and the San Francisco Bay Area. This city of approximately 130,000 people is located on the northern shore of San Pablo Bay and is settled between the cities of San Francisco and Sacramento. The population continues to grow strongly and steadily, and has a multitude of different activities available for the people living in or visiting Vallejo, California.

The History of Vallejo, CA

Vallejo, California is situated on land that was once inhabited by three different Native American tribes, the Miwok tribe, Suisune tribe, and Patwin tribe. In 1844, the land was given away in a 66,000 acre land grant from the Mexican government to General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. The city was named after this general because he settled the land and watched over the northern bay territory as well. In 1850, General Vallejo eventually acquiesced to the annexation of California to the United States and began planning a grand city which he wanted to call Eureka.

A site within General Vallejo’s land was chosen for the new city, and the building went on as proposed except for a name change, officially naming the city Vallejo. For a while, Vallejo, CA was the capital of the state of California but less than a year later in 1852, the government decided to move the capital because there was no place for the state legislature members to meet within the new city. To make up for the loss, Mare Island Naval Shipyard was proposed by the government which was a landmark as well as a major shipbuilder for over one hundred years before closing.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

One of the places that should not be missed when visiting Vallejo is the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom amusement park. This amusement park not only has a number of rides and attractions but also has several marine animal shows that run during the day. Whether you want to take a ride on one of the many roller coasters available or just want to have the unique experience of interacting with dolphins, you can do it all while you are at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The park also has many other animals to see, not just marine animals, which are all in replicas of their natural habitats and include cougars, alligators, butterflies, lions, tigers, giraffes, and much more that makes Six Flags Discover Kingdom something not to miss!

Mare Island Historic Park

Home to the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard and now a historic park, the Mare Island Historic Park is an important part of Vallejo’s history. This island was the area commissioned for a naval shipyard after Vallejo lost the right to be the state capital in the 1850’s and was open for over a century, finally closing in 1996. Now the area is known as Mare Island Historic Park, and has several historic landmarks that everyone can enjoy. These historic buildings include a museum, St. Peter’s chapel, the shipyard commander’s mansion, and the captain’s quarters, all preserved for posterity. Mare Island Historic Park is also available to be rented out for weddings and special occasions, making this small peninsula a part of Vallejo’s history and economy for years to come.
