Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve
Are you looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the urban holiday season, vehicle, and pedestrian traffic? While it’s a season of merriment, the 24/7 city-esque nature of it all can become taxing even to the most extroverted Bay Area residents. One of our favorite getaways is the 243-acre Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve. This preserve is located on the Pescadero State Beach. From riparian woods to tidal estuary, a number of habitats serve as homes to gorgeous wildlife. From breathtaking cliffs to serene sandy areas, the Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve makes for a lovely daytrip.
Union Square Ice Rink
Ice Princess, Wintertime, It’s a Pleasure, One in a Million, Thin Ice, On Edge, My Lucky Star, Sun Valley Serenade, The Mighty Ducks… what’s your favorite ice skating movie? ‘Tis the season to start watching those seasonal and holiday films, oftentimes the ones we’ve loved since childhood.
The Dandy Warhols Play Great American Music Hall
On Tuesday December 1st and Wednesday December 2nd at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., The Dandy Warhols will play the Great American Music Hall at 859 O’Farrell in San Francisco. The show will be well worth the $30 ticket price or the $54.95 for dinner and admission. Joel Gion and Miranda Lee Richards will open.
Vallejo Art Walk
If you’re looking for something the locals love to do, you might consider the Farmers’ Market, the Symphony, or seasonal events such as Waterfront Weekend or the Northern California Pirate Festival.
Lee Ronaldo Plays Swedish American Hall
Sonic Youth is alternative rock. This is the band that inspired Pearl Jam and got a shout out from the Pixies. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley took rhythm, noise and art and threw it in a blender thereby creating one of the most influential bands of all time. Being the best band to ever come out of New York is an incredible feat in and of itself.
The Walt Disney Family Museum
You don’t need to go to Los Angeles to get a dose of Disney. The Walt Disney Family Museum is located right here in the Bay Area at 104 Montgomery Street at the Presidio in San Francisco. The museum is a non-profit established by the celebrity’s daughter, and, although it is not affiliated with the Walt Disney Company, it’s a must-see for any fan.
San Francisco’s Now Panhandle Festival 2015
Twice a year, the neighborhoods around San Francisco’s Panhandle host the Now Festival, a series of free community events from October 28th until November 3rd. The neighborhood-wide projects have included things like acoustic jam sessions, free yoga workshops, book talks, silent discos, cookie swaps, and much more.
North Berkeley 7th Annual Mexican Dia de los Muertos
The fall season brings the 7th annual traditional Mexican Dia de los Muertos celebration to North Berkeley. The event is taking place November 2nd from 5-9pm and will feature a wine and beer garden, food booths and trucks, and art and craft vendors. Activities for kids and adults alike include ceramic and sugar skull painting and pet altar creations.
Bay Area Restaurant Hopping
There’s a new craze in the Bay Area, and it’s called restaurant hopping. Particularly popular for first dates, anniversaries, birthdays, or just to switch things up, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and other area residents have been opting to dine at a handful of restaurants… all in one night. No, this isn’t about binge eating. Rather, it’s a tapas-style approach. It’s a way to make an evening of some of the best dining in the world. Also, if you prefer Asian fusion cuisine, for example, but your sweetheart enjoys the finest of French food, this is the ideal way to ensure that everyone is happy.
The Flaming Lips Play San Francisco on New Years Eve
The Flaming Lips are still the band to see after over 30 years of performing. The fact that they are from Oklahoma City is just the tip of the weird iceberg that is Wayne Coyne and his band mates. Here are some of the things the Lips live shows have bequeathed to the world: puppets, giant hands, elaborate costumes, blood (lots of blood), confetti, a video of an eye surgery, a gigantic inflatable hamster ball, and more confetti. Lots of confetti.
