Lee Ronaldo Plays Swedish American Hall
Sonic Youth is alternative rock. This is the band that inspired Pearl Jam and got a shout out from the Pixies. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley took rhythm, noise and art and threw it in a blender thereby creating one of the most influential bands of all time. Being the best band to ever come out of New York is an incredible feat in and of itself.
Despite existing at the cutting edge of music since their inception in 1981, they have been remarkably prolific with 16 studio albums including Dirty, which is arguably the best album of the 1990s. Their live shows are reminiscent of a more simple time of stripped down, straightforward rock without pyrotechnics or anything else to dilute the power of these incredible musicians.
Making Music History
In 1991, Sonic Youth toured with a little known band called Nirvana. Kurt Cobain often said that tour was his formative moment as a musician. Take the time to watch 1991: The Year Punk Broke to see early Nirvana, but, even more to see how innovative and powerful Sonic Youth was at their apex. Sonic Youth has maintained a credibility over the years that fans and critics respect completely and that contemporary bands can never hope to emulate. Unfortunately, Sonic Youth is no longer together! Fans are mourning their break up, but there is hope for the future. Co-Founder Lee Ronaldo is on tour.
