From breathtaking cliffs to serene sandy areas, the Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve makes for a lovely daytrip.

Are you worried that winter might not be the season for such a visit? Fear not. The preserve serves as a wintering area for a number of waterfowl. You’re sure to see the wildlife you seek on the various trails, which are open to nature-seekers year-round, including the North Pond Trail, Round Hill Trail, Butano Trail, and Sequoia Audubon Trail, the latter of which is perhaps the most diverse. You’ll hike across a bridge and through dunes, marshlands, woody areas, and coastal shrubs. Bring a picnic and binoculars, and don’t forget to take in the view at Pescadero Rock, where you might find sea lions, mollusks, black oystercatchers, harbor seals, and more.

This San Mateo County Nature Preserve is a wetland habitat located at New Year’s Creek Rd., Pescadero, CA 94060. Only one hour south of San Francisco by car, you can stop in on Half Moon Bay, a beautiful coastal city. Pillar Point Harbor is worth a look. Sightseeing while driving down US-101 S, however, is less than ideal. You’ll be forced to focus on the road!
