Up Your Alley Street Fair
When it comes to the Up Your Alley Fair, it’s hard to know where to begin. Is it with the leather? The flogging? The BDSM? Maybe a lighter touch would better introduce the topic. With that in mind, let’s start with the uniqueness of expression on hand to be celebrated at the Up Your Alley Fair!
San Francisco Shakespeare Festival: Free Shakespeare in the Park
Ah, the immortal Bard. Few examiners of the human soul have managed to reverberate across the centuries like the pointy bearded poet from Stratford-Upon-Avon, and even fewer have resulted in major events in almost every Western city (and many non-western cities) to emerge as a chance to celebrate their life and work. We are, of course, speaking of the legendary William Shakespeare! And while his barbed quips and saucy jabs might come across as slightly antiquated (what even is a Tewkesbury Mustard?), there is no denying that he holds an unparalleled place in the minds of millions.
Neverland: The Epic Immersive Experience
On of the fastest growing fads in the world of performance is immersive theater. Very likely you have heard something about it, and perhaps you’ve even gone to an immersive theater event yourself. If so, than you know the general setup. For those who might be a little further in the dark, we will illuminate:
Berkeley Festival and Exhibition of Early Music
No matter what type of music you love, there is a good chance that a music festival exists devoted solely to its celebration. From Pitchfork to Electric Forest to everything in between, almost every nook and cranny in the country seems to lay claim to its own massive gathering of musicians and fans.
Celebrate Filipino Culture at KalayaanSF 2018
San Francisco’s historic Union Square is the location of many of the city’s eclectic and unpredictable events. This summer will see no shift in that paradigm as numerous festivals, bazaars, and markets will take over this impressive space, each promising to share a unique vision to those who visit during their specific event. One of the most exciting upcoming offerings at Union Square is KalayaanSF.
EXIT Theatre’s Talk Story Festival
For lovers of live theater, San Francisco is one of the best places on earth to land. Especially if you are interested in the unique, the otherworldly, the genre-busting, the weird, and the unexpected, San Francisco’s abundance of theater troupes and stages makes it a veritable mecca of memorable theater. One of the most well known theaters in the entire city is EXIT Theatre, and this June will see EXIT Theatre transform itself into a sort of cabaret of storytelling.
CROSSROADS 2018
It is a well known fact that artistic trends most often begin along the fringes of artist activity. Remember when punk music was only for dirty people with shaved heads? And now, if you aren’t well versed in Blondie’s catalogue, you are something of a square. It is a fact universally acknowledged that a hip trend of today most often finds its antecedents in the underground trend of yesteryear. That being said, the avant-garde can still be an off-putting experience. What better way to overcome one’s aversion to the current cutting edge than by diving into an entire film festival devoted to it?
34th Annual Fillmore Jazz Festival
Jazz and it’s cousin, hip-hop are two of the only genres of music that can be said to be primarily American. With its pastiche of musical styles, its roots in African-American history, and its comfort in both carnage hall and the bar down the street, jazz exists as a mirror to our own country’s mashup of identity. Partially for this reason, because it so closely resembles us and the ways our differing identities mix and match, jazz acts as a tie that can help bind even the most disparate seeming elements of our society together.
Juneteenth Parade and Festival
On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger led the Union army into Galveston Texas. He carried with him the news that the Civil War was over, that the North had won, and that all of the slaves still being held were now completely free. In honor of this landmark event, Dr. Wesley Johnson Sr. held, in 1950, a celebration in San Francisco at the Texas Playhouse, located on Fillmore Street.
Trio of Fantastic Summer Events
On our little blog we like to take time to highlight all of best things happening around the Bay Area so that you, dear traveler, can make sure to experience the best that this beautiful and vibrant area offers. But there are problems. As we move closer and closer to summer, the number of “must-see” events like festivals, concerts, marathons, art fairs, film festivals, and parades becomes staggeringly high. It seems that each month there are more and more things to take part in, and not a single one of them is dismissible.
