San Francisco Must-See Concerts in May
The Bay Area has long been a hot-bed for established musicians, and up and coming artists. It is a definitive destination on nearly all artists’ concert tours, and a coveted city to play for anyone looking to make a name for themselves in the business. So, while there are always a plethora of choices for local music lovers and tourists to go see, here are some must-see concerts that may have flown under the radar.
East India Youth
Appearing May 5 at the Independent in San Francisco, East India Youth is a four-piece band led by William Doyle. Part techno, part Detroit pop, this band is a treat for the ears and the eyes. They’ll be playing tunes from their new album, Total Strife Forever.
POW!
Also appearing on May 5, is POW!. They will be playing the Great American Music Hall. Some describe them as post-punk, while others feel they are a good segue into modern punk for young listeners. Either way, they are hard to describe, and best judged by seeing them for yourself, in person.
Afrolicious and Guests
On Thursday May 7, the Elbo Room will be taken over by the Afrolicious, with DJ and Host Pleasuremaker and other guest musicians. How do you describe them? Try Afro-Electro-House music with a good side of funk. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes.
California Honey Drops
One of California’s own party bands, the California Honey Drops are a crowd-pleaser for anyone looking to party. They are led by Lech Wierzynski, who plays multiple instruments, and their sound includes everything from R&B, Funk, Delta Blues and even a little Southern Soul. This is a high-energy show that is not to be missed. They will play at the New Parish on Thursday May 14 and Saturday May 16. They play several shows around the area, so it’s a sure-thing for anyone looking for a great dance band.
The Tallest Man on Earth
Thursday, May 21, San Francisco’s Fox Theater will be invaded by the Tallest Man on Earth. Don’t worry, Kristian Mattson is not there to crush your car, just to touch your soul with some of his orchestral, melancholic songs. This is a great show for lovers of alternative, soft music that makes you think, and is not readily accessible.
