California Girl Receives Limo Ride and Quinceañera She Will Never Forget
A 15-year-old California girl who has struggled with life-threatening health problems for the last three years got a limo ride and a quinceañera she and her family will never forget thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Berenice Jasso is a young lady from Escalon, California and the daughter of farm workers who thought they might lose their daughter due to kidney problems that confounded doctors. Shortly before she turned 14, her parents learned that Berenice’s kidneys were failing, and doctors could not identify the reason. Within a year of the diagnosis, both of her kidneys were removed, and Berenice lived for four months with frequent trips to a dialysis clinic to stay alive while they waited for a kidney to become available.
Doctors discovered that her mother was a potential donor, and a few months later, she donated one of her kidneys, which was transplanted into her daughter. Berenice’s long journey and extraordinary recovery from her life-threatening condition gave special meaning to the young lady’s quinceañera. In Latin cultures, a girl’s quinceañera is an important milestone marking her transition from childhood to womanhood. The fact that she was able to celebrate this special event at all was remarkable given her struggles with uncontrollable convulsions, sometimes waking up in the morning begin unable to see, intermittent comas, memory loss and other serious health problems. Berenice is not one to talk about her life back then. “It makes me sad. I try not to remember those days. People want to know, but I just say I got sick. My friends know it makes me sad, so they don’t even talk about it,” Berenice said just hours before her limo ride and perhaps the second-biggest day of her young life.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Sacramento and Northeastern California arranged the limo ride and her quinceañera in the ballroom of the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in downtown Stockton. Jesus Jasso, the young lady’s father, was overcome by emotion when his daughter arrived and stepped out of her limousine. “For me, I am too much happy, because I see my daughter happy. It’s a new life for her and for me. We give thanks to God for the miracle of life,” he said after the traditional father-daughter quinceañera dance to “Tus 15 Años.” He and around 275 guests celebrated this major event in this remarkable young lady’s life, and by all accounts, everyone had a wonderful time.
