de Young’s Royal Hawaiian Featherwork: Nā Hulu Ali‘I Exhibit

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on October 13, 2015

Now through February 28th, Hawaiian culture, history, and art will be on display at the Textiles Gallery of the de Young Museum. The Nā Hulu Ali‘I Exhibit presents some of the world’s most intricate featherwork sent from the generous Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu. In fact, this is the first time in history that Hawaiian featherwork will be formally displayed on the mainland!

Over seventy rare works of art will be available for viewing, including but not limited to:

  • cloaks (‘ahu‘ula),
  • royal staffs (kāhili),
  • feather leis (lei hulu manu),
  • among other breathtaking treasures.

These ancient and precious items are stunning, but they are also deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural aspects of Hawaiian history. Hawaiian chiefs, for example, looked to these articles for power, protection, and much more.

How have curators and other caregivers preserved these treasured artifacts? A related exhibit, Featherwork: A Conservator’s Approach, is also on display. Learn about the art and the science behind the delicate procedures required to maintain the integrity of ancient featherwork masterpieces, and look forward to the following:

  • View an ornate Chinese hat composed of Kingfisher feathers, beads, silk, and gold leaf.
  • Learn about an early 20th century Inuit parka composed of Murre breasts, wolf hair, and sealskin.
  • Admire a set of stunning African headdresses.
  • Enjoy a brilliantly colored gift basket made from woodpecker and quail feathers, skillfully trimmed with clamshells.
