Get A History Lesson
California Academy of Sciences is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. It began in 1853 as a society for educated individuals in the San Francisco area and grew to become a major museum with 26 million specimens. A completely rebuilt facility opened in 2008 and encompasses 400,000 square feet. A visit to the museum is a chance to see one of the gems of the Bay Area.
Appearance Matters
The California Academy of Sciences always has special exhibits that educate the public about the natural world. “Color of Life” is currently one of the featured attractions. The exhibit explains the role that color plays in the natural world. From the bright colors of an Amazon frog to the bold colors of birds around the world, the exhibit explores animal behavior in a variety of habitats.
Morrison Planetarium
A visit to the California Academy of Sciences wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Morrison Planetarium. A 75-foot dome displays some of the most accurate and immense digital images in the world. The images have been described as flying. The planetarium shows a variety of programs throughout the year. The programs are usually science focused and can sometimes feature some of the top names in the entertainment. The planetarium also has live broadcasts on important topics.
Nightlife VIP Tours
For anyone who wants to visit the museum in style, the Nightlife VIP tour is a must. Everything Thursday night, the museum offers people special after-hours access to the event with VIP tickets. The night starts with drinks and appetizers in an exclusive area where you mingle with other Nightlife Tour individuals. You then get a private tour through the California Academy of Sciences and can talk with the scientists and professionals who work at the museum. It’s a chance to learn about earth’s history and enjoy a relaxing night out on the town. The tour ends inside the Osher Rainforest. All told, the event last about an hour and a half.
