A Quick Guide to San Francisco Museums and Other Cultural Institutions

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on August 4, 2010

San Francisco is home to some of the finest museums in North America, which feature a wealth of interesting things to see for kids of all ages. Whether you’re a visual art aficionado, love public aquaria, are an arts and crafts enthusiast, want to take the kids for their Disney fix or want to check out another cool cultural facility, San Francisco has you covered. Here are some Bay Area museums to help you plan your next visit:

•    de Young Museum

Located in Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum is home to classic and impressionistic art. Some say that the museum building itself is a piece of art, but there are those who are less charitable in their opinions of the building. Admission is free the first Tuesday of every month!

•    SF Museum of Modern Art (SF-MOMA)

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a fine place to see striking modern art in a new and very cool setting. Tickets are only $12.50, but admission is free the first Tuesday of every month or half-price every Thursday evening from 6 pm to 9 pm.

•    San Francisco Zoo

Someone told me it’s all happening at the zoo. I do believe it, I do believe it’s true. The San Francisco Zoo is a marvelous place to spend a day. Adult tickets are $15.00; admission for kids 14 and under is $9.00. The first Wednesday of every month, admission is free for San Francisco residents with ID.

•    Asian Art Museum

This is one of the world’s largest collections of Asian art and a great way to spend an afternoon. Admission is free the first Sunday of every month. Otherwise, tickets are $12.00 for adults and free for kids 12 and under.

•    Walt Disney Family Museum

When it’s time to get your Disney on, this is the place! Located in San Francisco’s Presidio, this museum is a great place to see the history of Disney characters loved around the world. Admission is $20.00 for adults and $12.00 for kids. As you might guess, this is a very popular destination. Make reservations online before you go or you might be disappointed.

•    The Exploratorium

This place is so cool and has so many things to see and do that kids and adults alike might forget that they are learning. Admission is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for ages 13-17 and $10.00 for kids under 13. Admission is free the first Wednesday of each month.

•    Aquarium of the Bay

The jewel of the San Francisco cultural scene, the Aquarium of the Bay opened in 2008, and it is simply a marvelous facility. General admission tickets are $16.95 for adults and $8.00 for kids ages 3 to 11. Special Behind the Scenes tickets are $21.95 for adults and $14.00 for kids. This is an amazing place. Don’t miss it.
