San Francisco cable car rentals | San Francisco Travel Blog
Most travelers heading to San Francisco consider a cable car ride up and down our city’s steep streets an essential part of the experience. However, many are not prepared for the wait times that cable car riders often have to face, especially during the summer season. If you want an authentic San Francisco cable car experience but don’t care to spend your time waiting in line, we have good news! You can rent one of our affordable motorized cable cars with friends and family and experience the Bay Area on your own terms! Our San Francisco cable car rentals look, sound and feel just like the ones you see on postcards but have several advantages, including these:
Unlike the cable cars that are limited to tracks, our San Francisco cable car rentals can take you wherever you’d like to go! You can use them to drop you and your friends and family off at the city’s best shopping districts, restaurants, clubs and other destinations. You can also design your own sightseeing tour and experience the grandest sights and off-the-beaten-track destinations for a truly authentic Bay Area experience.
Our cable cars are available in the traditional open-air version, as well as the warmer and more comfortable enclosed version to protect you from the chilly breezes off the Bay. The weather here can be unpredictable, so if you’re not sure which type of cable car will be best for an upcoming visit, simply ask your reservation specialist for a recommendation based on the forecast.
Unlike traditional cable cars, ours are available at all times, making it easier for you and your party to make plans around your schedule, rather than the Transportation Agency’s limited schedules.
Our cable cars comfortably accommodate up to 34 friends and family members with plenty of space for everyone. Rather than having to bump elbows with strangers, you and your friends and family can stretch out, relax and enjoy having your own cable car experience.
These are just a few of the very practical reasons to rent our San Francisco cable cars for your upcoming visit. They are also quite affordable, making it easy for you to split the rental or treat your whole group to an authentic San Francisco experience. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the state agency responsible for protecting Californians against illegal passenger carriers, recently announced enforcement actions against a variety of limousine, bus and shuttle companies. These actions addressed violations of the Public Utilities Code and CPUC rules and regulations during the second quarter of 2012. A total of ten companies received citations and were fined a total of $28,500 for one or more of the following violations:
- Illegal display of charter-party carrier identification
- Failing to respond to consumer complaints
- Operated without a valid authority (suspended or unlicensed) program
- Advertised a revoked permit number
- Operated vehicles that are not insured at the required minimum level of public liability and property damage insurance
- Failed to enroll drivers in DMV Pull Notice program
- General Order 157-D violation (failed to maintain a current equipment list, no sub-carrier agreement or incomplete waybills)
- Engaged employees without procuring evidence of workers’ compensation insurance
- Failed to enroll and/or pre-employment test drivers in a mandatory drug and alcohol
- Failed to properly report gross revenue earned
A variety of Bay Area limousine companies and other operators throughout California received the fines and citations, and three other companies received criminal filings for serious infractions that included the following:
- Filing a false claim of proper insurance coverage when the company had no insurance coverage at all
- Operating a limousine service after having their permit suspended for other violations
- Operating without a valid authority and various workers’ compensation violations
We pass this information along to our readers on a regular basis in an effort to let them know about the scope of illegal and unethical limo, bus and shuttle services in our state and ways to protect themselves from becoming victims of shady operators. Anyone who wishes to know the names of the companies cited by the CPUC at any given time can visit the CPUC website for more information. Anyone wishing to check out a limousine service, bus charter, airport shuttle or other type of group transportation company before making a reservation can also check out the CPUC site to ensure that they have the proper licensing and insurance coverage.

Some newlyweds in Minnesota and their wedding party had an unexpected detour on the way from the ceremony to their wedding reception recently. Ken and Liz McDonald and their wedding party were relaxing and having fun in the back of their limo bus when one of the bridesmaids noticed smoke rising through the seats. After learning about the smoke, the chauffeur immediately pulled over to the side of Interstate 35 and asked his guests to quickly get out of the limo bus. Everyone got out safely before the bus was engulfed in flames. The groom said that the wedding party got out of the limo bus with little time to spare.
“Two minutes later we were 100 yards from the bus and it was up in flames,” said groom Ken McDonald. “The plume was unbelievable.”
A police officer who stopped to investigate the fire notified the fire department and then transported the bride and groom to their reception. The rest of the wedding party was picked up shortly thereafter by the bride and groom’s parents and made it to the reception without further incident. The limo bus was a complete loss, and the owner is waiting on the report from the fire department to learn how the fire started.
