San Francisco Neighborhood Guide: Inner Sunset

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on December 13, 2010

If you’re traveling to the area and are looking for a truly unique San Francisco experience, it’s hard to top the city’s Inner Sunset neighborhood. Inner Sunset is not the place for sun worshipers; it is smack-dab in the middle of our fair city’s fog zone, and the fog shrouds this unique neighborhood day and night every month of the year. Bordered by Golden Gate Park on the north side and Vicente Street to the south, Inner Sunset is regarded by many San Franciscans as their favorite neighborhood in the city. They love its eclectic ethnic mix of shops and restaurants, its unique vibe and its unusual small-town feel in one of the world’s great cities.

Inner Sunset is another of San Francisco’s neighborhoods that was once sand dunes and little else. In 1887, a developer with a truly great name, Aurelius E. Buckingham, saw the area’s potential and began building out this suburb, which he called the “Sunset District.” This was an irony that was not lost on the neighborhood’s first immigrants, the Irish, who were quite familiar with the constant fog and cold, humid climate of their homeland. A few years later, the University of California chose Inner Sunset as the site for their new medical campus, which became a hub of commerce to accommodate students and residents alike.

Low rents attracted many waves of immigrants in the following years, particularly Asians, who settled here, opened businesses and thrived. Relatively low, but stable rents and property values continued until the 80s when developers of a different kind saw the neighborhood’s potential. This huge influx of capital and investment sent property values soaring and attracted national chain retailers eager to capitalize on the area’s newfound affluence.

Today, Inner Sunset is a unique neighborhood of single-family homes, great schools and locally owned and operated restaurants, grocery stores, gift shops and other businesses. Inner Sunset is a neighborhood that feels very residential, and many say the best time to experience this place is a weekend morning when locals are running errands, shopping and chatting over cups of coffee in the area’s many cafes. The area’s reputation for superb dining makes parking near Inner Sunset’s commercial strips a tricky and time-consuming proposition. So, if you’re planning a visit to the area, why not travel in style by renting one of our San Francisco limos?

After strolling through the neighborhood during the day, have us pick you up wherever you’d like and drop you off for dinner at one of the area’s great restaurants. After dinner, arrange for us to have the champagne chilled and have your chauffeur take you on a nighttime tour of the Bay Area to take in the sights.
