Navigating San Francisco’s Food Scene with These Five Must-Have Apps

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on March 7, 2016

With more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in America, finding the perfect place to eat in San Francisco is a challenge, to say the least. It’s especially overwhelming for tourists who may be visiting the city for the first time, or even the fifth time. When I first experienced this challenge for myself, I turned where I always turn to when I need help – my smartphone. There truly is an app for everything, even finding the perfect place to eat in America’s largest food capital. We’re leaving out the big guys like Yelp, OpenTable, and Foursquare on this one – but that’s not to say reviews on these sites aren’t helpful.

  1. Dishero
Want to know what the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna at Butterfly looks like, or what you can expect from the Steak Tartare at The Big 4? Dishero is packed with high quality photos of some of the most popular dishes in town and along with each photo is a convenient link to the restaurant’s full menu. From there you can share the dish with a friend, “Like” it so you can remember to try it later, or book a table through OpenTable so you can try it out as soon as possible.
  2. Tablehopper’s Top Late-Night Eats in SF
Even the food capital of America closes its doors around 10pm, but if you’re out late and looking for something scrumptious, Tablehopper’s Top Late-Night Eats app will be your new best friend. The app offers suggestions on where to go grab a late night meal (and no, it’s not a Taco Bell 4th meal or Wendy’s locations open until 3am). Scroll through local restaurants with late night menus and read through details about the restaurant’s ambiance and recommendations on what to order when you get there.
  3. Chef’s Feed
Who better to offer a restaurant recommendation than an actual chef? That’s exactly the thought process behind the app Chef’s Feed, which offers restaurant recommendations around various cities (including San Francisco) and dish reviews written by real chefs. Chefs suggest where you should go, what you should order, and why they like it. Food is organized within the app by dishes nearby, featured dishes in town, and featured chefs in the area. You can also browse through a number of curated lists to discover things like the best burrito, sushi, or oysters in town based on chef’s recommendations.
  4. 7×7 Big Eat
Each year, San Francisco Magazine 7×7 compiles a list of “100 things to eat in San Francisco before you die.” In their app, they compile the lists from the past three years so you can discover what dishes are around you waiting to be tried right now. Restaurants are plotted out on a map, so you can plan your dining opportunities throughout your vacation, and each entry includes a photo of the dish in question, the restaurant’s hours, and directions on how to get there from where you are right now. If you find yourself in San Francisco often, you can also use the app to track your progress toward trying all 100 and compete with friends.
  5. Foodspotting
Visual people beware, this app will make your mouth water. Unlike other restaurant apps that curate suggestions based on reviews, the app focuses entirely on images. Sort of a cross between Yelp and Instagram, the only way to rate something is to simply like the photo. You can view pictures of food that’s available nearby, or browse through images based on what dishes have been shared recently or liked the most. Like Instagram, you can follow Foodspotters who have a similar taste to your own and upload pictures of dishes you’ve particularly enjoyed.

Once you’ve found the perfect meal, the next step is booking the perfect transportation. No matter if it’s a once-a-year celebration or a random Tuesday night excursion, booking a ride with NLS Limo is never a bad idea. We’ll eliminate worries and frustrations over directions, traffic, parking and designated driver duty so you can have the most enjoyable experience possible while visiting the one and only San Francisco bar and restaurant scene.
