9-Year-Old Sets Sights on Renting a Limo for Kids in Shelter
A story out of Iowa caught our eye recently. A nine-year-old Southeast Iowa girl named Presley Poor, who has created and administrated fundraisers for local kids and families living in a local emergency shelter, has put her next plan in motion. She’s going to raise funds to rent a limousine and take the kids staying at a local shelter for a day at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo. Ms Poor’s most recent fundraising success involved sponsoring a pizza party for 40 kids staying with their mothers at Lydia House, an emergency shelter in Omaha. Through sheer force of will and an uncommonly generous spirit, she singlehandedly raised $300 to make this pizza party happen.
As you might guess, Presley’s mother, Angela Poor, is fiercely proud of her little girl. When asked about what keeps her daughter fundraising and thinking about others, she said, “She just wanted to show some love.”
Presley has a running start on the power of networking to get things done. She canvases relatives for donations and then goes door-to-door to raise funds with fliers that she writes and draws to legitimize her cause and inspire donors to be generous. For her most recent triumph, the pizza party for 40 children, she raised enough to buy t-shirts for all, along with art supplies so that each kid could paint his or her shirt with something special. She used her negotiating skills to persuade the bakery department at the local Hy-Vee, a Midwestern grocery store chain, to donate cupcakes for the event.
Ms. Poor has set her sights on making the limousine/zoo excursion happen by Easter, and there’s no doubt in our minds that she’ll make it happen. It’s pretty clear to us that this girl has skills, wiles and, most important, a heart and generous spirit well beyond her years. She’s an inspiration to us all, and she got us thinking. If you know someone or a group of people that are experiencing hard times and deserve something special, rent them a limo ride. The Bay Area is home to many, many incredible places like zoos, aquariums, museums, parks and other points of civic pride.
