The Fox Oakland Theatre
Originally built as a movie theater, the Fox Oakland Theatre is now one of the Bay Area’s premier concert venues. It is located in the heart of downtown Oakland, a short drive from San Francisco, and surrounded by a plethora of restaurants, hotels and other amenities. Some of the most famous musicians of all-time have performed here, and will continue to perform in this newly renovated venue.
History
The Fox Theatre first opened in 1928 as a movie theater and operated as such until the early 1970’s. The interior and exterior are classic Middle-Eastern architecture, which gave the venue the nickname the Baghdad for a long time. It was also known by locals as The Oakland. The Fox Theatre is so unique, that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was sitting near vacant for almost four decades, and then in 2009 it was completely renovated and retrofitted to be a contemporary concert hall with nearly 2800 seats.
Multi-Use Venue
The Fox Oakland Theatre is a multi-use venue, being home to educational events, parties, exhibitions and a variety of entertainment acts. The Oakland School for the Arts is housed there, which teaches middle school and high school students in several art mediums including painting, sculpture and of course, music. The Fox Theatre also has a restaurant that is loved by many locals and tourists alike called Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe. It is actually owned by Mike Dirnt from Green Day, who have also played at this venue.
The Fox is primarily a concert venue however, and has showcased the legendary Bob Dylan, B.B. King, and Paul Simon, as well as Ween, Widespread Panic, and nineties rockers Alice in Chains. The Fox Theatre has a very intimate feel, with nearly each seat in the house having a great view of the stage. And since it has the movie-theater shape and acoustics, the sound is incredible as well. There are few venues with such unique character.
