Walnut Creek, California was originally inhabited by three different tribes of Bay Miwok Native Americans. These three tribes, known as the Saclan, Volvon, and Tactan, lived in this area until four land grants were created by the Mexican settlers and passed out by the government. The area was known as “The Corners” at that point in time, and the first building, a dwelling for settler William Slusher in 1849. In 1855, the town began to grow, with the building of the hotels, blacksmith shops, and other stores. Seven years later the name of “The Corners” was changed to Walnut Creek.

When the Southern Pacific railroad came to Walnut Creek, California, there was even more development to come, but the population grew slowly.
