Talk By Professor Kata Gellen
At noon on Tuesday, September 22nd, Stanford University’s Division of Literature, Cultures, and Languages will sponsor a talk by visiting Professor Kata Gellen in Piggott Hall’s Room 252. She will discuss her book, Kaftka and Noise: The Discovery of Cinematic Sound in the Literary Modernism. This important intellectual event is open to the public, and there is no charge for admission.
Franz Kaftka was a German fiction writer who lived from 1883 through 1924. He was a novelist and a short story writer who is perhaps best known for The Metamorphosis and The Castle, among others. Parent-child conflict, transformation, and alienation are among the themes critics have noticed within Kaftka’s work.
Kata Gellen is a professor of Germanic Languages and Literature with Duke University. Her areas of interest and specialty include the study of sound, Eastern European Jewish writing, Franz Kaftka, and more. She earned her PhD in German from Princeton University in 2010. She teaches German Film, German Academic Research, and other courses at Duke. Her recent publications include "The Media Myth of America: Joseph Roth’s Hiob and Tarabas" within the Journal of Austrian Studies, "Works Recited: Franz Kafka and the Art of Literary Recitation" at the Germanic Review, and "Hearing Spaces: Architecture and Acoustic Experience in Modernist German Literature" with Modernism/Modernity, among others.
