Take a trip to San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum with Nationwide Limousine Service

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on April 7, 2014

San Francisco has so many unique, wonderful and interesting museums that some are easy to overlook. One of the museums that is less well-known but exceptional nonetheless is the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco’s Civic Center District. Located just off Market Street at 200 Larkin St., this museum is one of those rare places where you can fully immerse yourself and lose all track of time and perhaps even your location. After a few steps in this museum, it would be easy for a guest to think they had been transported to India in the 14th Century, China during the Ming Dynasty, heading to Mecca on a hajj with other pilgrims in the Fourth Century A.D. or standing in Angkor Wat in Cambodia in the 1600s.

The culture, art, artifacts and individuality of many different Asian peoples are on display at this museum, organized by country or region. In fact, the museum showcases more than 18,000 objects of art, with some more than 6,000 years old. The impressive collection features a wide range of different types of artistic expression, including:

  • Carved jade figurines
  • Paintings
  • Porcelains
  • Weapons
  • Armor
  • Furniture
  • Textiles
  • Bronzes
  • Sculpture
  • Jewelry
  • Many other objet d’art

Aficionados strongly recommend that visitors grab a pair of headphones as they enter the Museum so that they can learn more about the history of many of the pieces, as well as the cultures that produced them. This allows guests to gain a much better appreciation of the nuances of each artwork, the symbolism presented in many of the works and the triumphs and trials of the cultures that produced them. If guests want an even deeper understanding of cultures and the art they produced, they can go on guided tours led by staffers, guest lecturers and other experts.

The Asian Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and closed on Monday. Tickets are quite reasonable at $12 for adults, with discounts for students and seniors and kids aged 12 and under are free. There is a café on-site when guests need a bite and a break, a library for serious research, a store where guests can buy a memento and support the Museum and other amenities as well. So if you’re looking for an affordable daytrip to another time and another continent, just head up Market to Larkin and travel thousands of miles and years in just a few steps at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco!
