NFL Super Bowl Gospel Celebration in Oakland
The 17th annual NFL sanctioned Super Bowl Gospel Celebration (SBGC) is one of the largest multi-cultural events taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area in advance of the big game on Sunday, Feb. 7th. The show hits the stage on Friday, Feb. 5th at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The annual event joins together NFL Players, the official NFL Players Choir, top Gospel and Contemporary Christian musical artists, and special guests all on one stage, to bring audience members an evening of inspirational music and uplifting messages.
The SBGC’s impressive line-up in previous years has led to sell-out performances in venues of recent Super Bowl host cities including San Diego, Tampa, Detroit, Jacksonville and Houston. The event’s previous star-studded rosters have included musical guests such as Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Gladys Knight, Mary Mary, Fantasia, Donnie McClurkin, Anthony Hamilton, Kirk Franklin, Israel Houghton & New Breed and Marvin Sapp, among many others. Current and former NFL player participants have included Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Ray Lewis, John Elway, Kurt Warner, Donovan McNabb, Coach Lovie Smith, Tony Dungy and many more. The acclaimed NFL Players Choir, which features present and former NFL players, has delivered show-stopping performances year after year.
The event also serves as a fundraiser with a portion of the proceeds benefiting national and local charities. Over $450,000 and 5,500 tickets have been donated to worthy organizations including Special Olympics, Urban League, Project Wave, YET and other charities over the last eleven years. This year, SBGC will donate funds to the NFL Player Care Foundation (PCF) which is an independent organization dedicated to helping retired players improve their quality of life.
“We founded this event to bring even more inspiration and celebration to one of the biggest events of the year – the Super Bowl,” says Melanie Few-Harrison, creator and producer of the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration. “Each year we aim to make the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration bigger than the last with artists and special guests from all backgrounds.” Given the rich musical history of The Bay Area and the powerful line-up of this year’s talent, the concert is sure to kick off the most celebrated Super Bowl in history in a positive way.
