Patriotic Music Happening at Golden Gate Park

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on September 1, 2015

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September and generally marks the end of summer. The holiday is a celebration of the America labor movement and is dedicated to the advancement of workers across the country. The tradition of Labor Day started in New York and became an American tradition in 1886 when President Grover Cleveland declared it a national holiday.

A fun way to celebrate Labor Day would be trip to Golden Gate Park. On September 6, the Golden Gate Park Band will present a concert of American and patriotic music to celebrate Labor Day. The event starts at 1 p.m. The concert is being held in the music concourse of Golden Gate Park – right near the California Academy of Science and the de Young Museum.

The Golden Gate Park Band is a San Francisco institution. Back in the late 1800s, when the Bay Area was filled with gold prospectors and merchant traders, a band was formed in the new Golden Gate Park. It was established to bring art and culture to the rough and tumble young city. The band has been playing continuously in the park for 133 years.

Michael Wirgler has been a member of the band for 40 years and has been the band’s conductor for 16 years. He and a group of around 40 musicians perform a series of free concerts in the park from April through October on Sunday at 1 p.m. They play a wide variety of music and have accumulated a huge library over the course of the band’s existence. Each year they play a large concert on the Fourth of July and have added the Labor Day show this year. Many of the members are older, but the band has been able to attract a new generation of musicians.

The challenge for anyone who wants to take in the Labor Day concert is accessing Golden Gate Park. There are bound to be thousands of people in the park on Labor Day, so driving in and around the park is going to be a challenge. Wouldn’t you like somebody else to do the driving? NLS Limo has an incredible selection of Bay Area event transportation, including:
