SF Design Week
San Francisco Design Week 2017 is currently running across the city from June 14-22. It is a series of events being held over a week and encompassing all of the variety that San Francisco has to offer. More than 60 studio tours will be open and 200 events held from the heart of Silicon Valley to the streets of downtown. Participants will be able to interact and engage with some of the greatest design minds that San Francisco and the world has to offer.
The event is being led by a team of advisors and a core community. Their goal is to represent the diversity of design disciplines in the Bay Area. The event is produced by AIGA SF. Advisors for design week include John Maeda (Automattic Global Head), Alex Schleifer (AirBnB, VP of Design), and Barry Katz (IDEO Fellow). This years theme, perfect for the modern world we live in, “Question Everything.” The sheer number of events is more than we can list and more than you can go to. So we’ve decided to give you a manageable list of events that you can’t miss.
SF Design Week Opening Party
The week kicks off with a performance from Butterscotch (America’s Got Talent), a showcase from Italian brand Casa Castiglioni, and an augmented reality exhibit from LOCZIdesign. The event begins at 6:30pm at Pier 27. This is a great way to rub elbows and get a taste of what the week has to offer.
Eat Drink and Design
This is a panel that focuses on the relationship between food and interior design. It makes perfect sense, that this panel is being held at Tratto. Puccini Group will discuss how the environment of a restaurant can greatly influence the dining experience. They will dive into the psychology of what you eat and where you eat it. Think about it, would you eat Turducken at a 50’s diner? Are you eating microwave burritos in a stylish loft apartment? Local artists Katy Rodden and Amos Goldbaum will be on hand to answer questions. Stop in at Tratto on June 15, 5:30-7:30pm.
Storyboarding with Mark Andrews
Mark will unveil the role that hard work holds in the realm of making, producing, and releasing some of the most loved animated movies of the last 20 years. Visual aides from real Pixar storyboards will help illustrate the journey of a movie and the role design plays in the process. June 15, 1-2pm, Pier 27
The Future of Making Things Now
Autodesk’s Maria Giudice will host this interactive workshop on how to make products in the modern age. Specifically, how are you going to create engaging products that utilize modern technology. June 15, 4-6pm, Autodesk, Pier 9
Astro Studios: Get Sketchy
Design company Astro celebrates local artists with a night of live sketching with well-known Bay Area designers. Those of you looking for some new art to decorate you walls can even purchase the pieces after they’re completed. June 16, 8-11pm, Astro Studios, 348 6th St
Film Screening: Yohji Yamamoto. Dressmaker
An intimate portrait of the life and work of 73-year-old Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. June 24, 1pm, YBCA Screening Room, 701 Mission St
