San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Festival
In 1993, a popular and incredibly skilled hip-hop dance teacher in San Francisco named Micaya decided to start putting on her own shows. Funded largely by her own means and the donations of friends and family, Micaya’s shows were an immediate success, and they began selling out almost immediately. From these humble beginnings, Micaya’s endeavors in the Mission District have blossomed into one of San Francisco’s most exciting yearly events: the San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Fest.
Now entering its 19th year of electrifying dance, the San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Fest has moved from the smaller clubs and theaters throughout the Mission and is now located at the world famous Palace of Fine Arts. Anyone in San Francisco from the 17th until the 19th of November will have the marvelous opportunity to experience this incredible event, which is still largely the result of Micaya’s labors and love.
Bringing her 20+ years of experience to the table, Micaya’s abilities as a choreographer and producer shine through during Hip Hop Fest as she brings together numerous dance troupes together for this event. Voted the Bay Area’s Best Dance Teacher in a 2012 Reader’s Poll put out by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Micaya’s work and the San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Fest proves that this contemporary dance tradition is one that deserves to be as treasured and supported as any other art form based on physical movement.
As well as numerous performances, the 19th International Hip Hop Dance Festival will also feature several classes in the hip hop dance tradition, including:
- Master Class with BirdGang Dance Company: starting with a piece pulled directly from one of their most recent pieces, this London dance company will bring participants into the inner process of this complex piece and unpack the various ways that movement flows from large concepts to small.
- Master class with Singapore’s own ScRach MARCs.
- Master Class with Iron Skulls: focusing on how collective work lies at the core of dance, the Barcelona based Iron Skulls dance at the intersection of martial arts, Butoh, and urban and contemporary dance traditions.
