San Francisco Film Festival Season
April in most cities around the United States means spring cleaning, celebrating Easter, and rainy days. And while there’s no shortage of any of those things in San Francisco, April in the Bay Area also means one other very important thing – Film Festival Season. April draws film enthusiasts from all corners of the Globe who come to witness one, or all, of the distinct film festivals that take place every spring. Here’s a roundup of the film festivals in April 2016:
Crossroads Film Festival
April 1-3 | Victoria Theater| http://www.sfcinematheque.org/
Since its founding in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque has become one of the most knowledgeable and respected showcases of experimental film and video in the world. Their annual Crossroads Film Festival celebrates new works of aesthetically radical cinema by emerging and established filmmakers, including film screenings and works of “live cinema.”
Food & Farm Film Fest
April 1-3 | Roxie Theater | http://www.roxie.com/ai1ec_event/food-and-farm-film-festival/
A Bay Area film festival fittingly focused on food also includes a few tastings from local chefs who create pairings for each day’s films. Intended to entertain and inform, the featured films are a celebration of food and farming, as well as a challenge to contemporary methods of food production. Festival proceeds support Cooking Matters, a San Francisco-based nonprofit offering nutrition and cooking classes in low-income communities.
Disposable Film Festival
April 7-10 | Castro Theater | http://disposablefilm.com/
Selected by Moviemaker Magazine as one of "The World’s Coolest Film Festivals," Disposable Film Festival has been, for a decade, a pioneer in bringing the best online video across the globe from the personal screen to the main screen. Through screenings, workshops, competitions, panels, parties, and other events the Disposable Film Festival promotes and supports the next generation of filmmakers to enter and change the industry.
San Francisco Green Film
April 14-20 | Various Venues | http://www.greenfilmfest.org/
Films, visiting filmmakers and guest speakers from around the globe cover environmental topics surrounding clean energy, green chemistry, food, housing, trash, water and art in the environment.
San Francisco International Film Festival (SFIFF)
April 21 – May 5 | Castro Theater and Sundance Cinemas Kabuki Theatres | http://www.sffs.org/
The grand-daddy of film festivals everywhere, SFIFF is the longest-running film festival in the Americas and a beloved showcase of cinematic discovery. An essential stop on the international film festival circuit, SFIFF is well regarded as a significant celebration of world cinema, and last year’s Festival featured 252 screenings of 183 films from 47 countries, which were attended by over 315 filmmakers and industry guests from around the globe.
