San Francisco Festivals in August
San Francisco, with its famous Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and Alcatraz Island, attracts millions of tourists each year. Despite the hot weather, tourism in San Francisco reaches a peak during summer months, partly because of the great festivals, from food to film, art, and music. Here are some of our favorites:
Nihonmachi Street Fair, August 1-2
The 42nd edition of the Nihonmachi Street Fair offers mentoring and leadership opportunities to young Asian Americans, honoring what could have been the disappearance of the multiculturalism of Japantown. This street festival offers visitors a full experience, providing local entertainment with Asian-Pacific influences, Asian-Pacific traditional food and fusion cuisine, a Doggie World Parade and a car exhibition. More details are provided here.
Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, August 7-9
This festival, held annually at the Golden Gate Park, is becoming more and more popular. This year’s lineup includes artists such as Elton John, Sam Smith, Angus and Julia Stone, Mumford and Sons, Billy Idol, Tame Impala, George Ezra and many more. The festival also features comedy and improvisation shows, night shows, and artsy elements (which are yet to be presented to the public). Those who attend the festival can enjoy beer, wine and chocolate, as well as a wide variety of food. Details regarding tickets, schedule and accommodation can be found here.
Japan Film Festival, August 7-16
This film festival takes place in Japantown, with a grand opening at the Castro Theater. This is a rather special event, as it is the only event dedicated entirely to Japanese film in the San Francisco area. This year’s special guest is the internationally acclaimed actor Tadanobu Asano. Further information on the tickets and film screenings is available here.
J-Pop Summit, August 8-9
The 7th edition of J-Pop Summit takes place in four locations, namely the Fort Mason Center, Union Square, Castro Theater and NEW PEOPLE Cinema. The festival introduces the San Francisco audience to the latest trends in Japan in terms of music, food, film, art, anime, fashion and technology. For further information, access the official website of the event.
San Francisco Street Food Festival, August 15-16
This festival at Pier 70 features not only food from the best restaurants in the San Francisco area, but also music and beverages. Keep in mind that this is a smoke-free festival. Details on restaurants, tickets, and more can be accessed here.
Turkish Film Festival, August 18-20
Turkey’s best cinema comes to San Francisco at the Embarcadero Center Cinema, and screenings are free. This year’s edition includes the films “The Husband Factor” and “The Miracle.” Full film details and schedule are available on the event’s official website.
