Fun and Games at the Marion County Fair
One of the best parts about the summer—aside from the warm weather, the cool water, and the long days—are the county fairs. Almost all of us have been to more than one, and that smell of hay, cotton candy, funnel cakes, and hot metal emanating from the ancient looking rides can easily take us on a Proustian revel through our own lost time. If this sounds familiar to you, and if you long to experience it all once again, then no time is better than the beginning of July. Why? Because that’s when the Marion County Fair comes to the Bay Area!
Running from the 30th of June until the 4th of July, the Marion County Fair is the best place in the greater San Francisco Area for a jam-packed weekend of live music, amusement rides, carnival style games, delicious baked goods, lots of adorable animals, and—because we are only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys—wine!
Considered one of the most essential Bay Area summer events, the Marion County Fair also includes plenty of live music, and a main stage schedule to rival even the best of summer music events. This year, acts stepping up to entertain Marion County visitors include:
- Michael Franti!— more than just a musical genius, Michael Franti also dabbles in filmmaking and humanitarian activism. He strives to make his live shows a burst of joy and positive energy that will boost even the most glum of spirits.
- Eddie Money!— Those of us born before 1977 can likely remember the release of Money’s first album which featured the rockin’ grooves “Baby Hold On,” as well as “Two Tickets to Paradise.” A Grammy-nominated artist, Money is undoubtedly very excited to perform at the Marion County State Fair!
- The Beach Boys!—Surfs up! And that means the Beach Boys are coming to town! They’ll be riding on the heels of their many sold out shows throughout the country, high on the extracts pulled from life itself, and ready to perform over and over again songs like “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Beach Baby,” and, of course, “Kokomo.”
So much more will happen at the Marion County Fair, and your ticket to the event opens up a world of fun. Ride the 28 free rides! Watch the nightly fireworks! Juggling! And so, so, so much more.
