Bay Area Maker Faire

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on March 18, 2016

Creative types, rejoice! The Maker Faire is an event hosted by cities nationwide to celebrate the beauty of creation via technology, crafting, innovation, engineering, art, education and more. Described as “part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new,” the Maker Faire is something of a miniature World’s Fair, showcasing the work of “makers’” most cutting-edge works, as well as inspiring communities – especially youth – to be a part of innovation for the future. The Bay Area is an especially unique experience as one of the event’s flagship locations.

The 2016 Bay Area Maker Faire will take place in San Mateo from May 20-22, and will be presented by Intel. Specific program information has not yet been provided, but previous years have seen over 900 exhibitors and 300 presentations/shows across 12 stages and four attraction areas. Previous topics have spanned a wide range of materials, technologies and creations, including paper airplanes, rube goldberg machines, Arduino microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, milling machines, robotics, synthetic biology and more. Attendees are encouraged to get involved in hands-on activities and learn new skills from unique exhibitors throughout the event.

All types of people and families are welcome to the Faire, not only those who are involved in technology or innovation as an industry. The Maker Faire isn’t just for adults, either; according to event statistics, 50% of attendees visited the Faire with their kids. No outside food is allowed inside the gates of the Faire itself, but there are a variety of food and beverage options available for purchase throughout the grounds.

Makers of all kinds from the Bay Area community are welcome to take part each year, with submission options available online. Though the 2016 application deadlines have passed, the Bay Area Maker Faire website still offers information and resources for potential 2017 exhibitors. But of course you do not have to be a ‘maker’ to enjoy the 2016 Bay Area Maker Faire. A visit as an observer is a one of a kind experience – and one made really remarkable when you arrive and depart in the comfort of your own private car curtesy of Nationwide Limousine Service.
