35th SF Jazz Festival

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on June 6, 2017

San Francisco has a rich history in the world of jazz. The rise of Jazz led to clubs being opened in the 40’s and 50’s. Fast forward to 1983, when the first San Francisco Jazz Festival premiered. Since it’s inception, the festival has prided itself in exploring all facets and sub-cultures of Jazz. The festival runs from June 6th to June 18th. It boasts 43 concerts, 13 days, and 5 venues all within the Hayes Valley. This years venues include the Joe Henderson Lab, the Miner Auditorium, the Herbst Theatre, Davies Symphony Hall, with a Kick-off Party at the Corner of Hayes and Octavia Streets. Ticket prices vary for the different concerts on offer. If you can see all 43 concerts, by all means do so. For those of you on a limited budget or with limited time, we’re here to suggest some acts that are poised to tear down the house.

Jacob Collier

Collier is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and also an inventor. He rose to fame by creating youtube videos of him playing every instrument of a song. The videos created such a buzz that he was signed by Quincy Jones management company and released In My Room last year. At only 22, he’s a musical phenom that is only starting his career. His performance this year promises to be a feat to behold, as he will be performing a one man concert. Audiences get drawn in by watching the tools and devices he creates to allow him to play multiple instruments at the same time.

Lizz Wright

Lizz is a jazz singer in the tradition of Billie Holiday. It’s telling that her style is so similar and strong, given that she first got into the genre by singing Holiday songs. She has since gone on to write her own jazz classics and established herself as one of the powerhouses of jazz singing. She’s released four albums on Verve Records, and recently released Freedom & Surrender, as her debut for Concord. Her voice has be described as strong and smooth, but with an air of huskiness to lend to her charm.

The Suffers

The Suffers is a 10-piece band hailing from Houston. They have appeared on several prominent late night shows. The band was formed 6 years ago, and in that short amount of time, they’ve established themselves as one of the jazz bands to watch. The band is known for their charming performances as well as their charismatic band members. They really put on a show when all members ramp it up.
