2016 San Francisco International Arts Festival
The San Francisco International Arts Festival is one of the most highly lauded and anticipated events of its kind anywhere in the country. This year, events kicked off on May 19th, and they will continue to occur until June 5th at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture as well as other locations throughout the city. As this is an international art show, contributing artists come from all over the world, representing countries like France, Japan, Lithuania, Serbia, Taiwan, and Columbia. The artist’s exhibits will be displayed in various fashions, from dance to sculpture to film, which ensures that everyone can find something to fascinate and entertain them during their stay in the Bay Area. Of the dozens of upcoming events related to the festival, we are highlighting three of our favorites for you.
- Dada Here and Now: Bringing fresh viewpoints and inspiration to the revolutionary and controversial early 20th century art movement known as “Dada,” Dada Here and Now seeks to bring some of the methods of Dada to our contemporary world, which is eerily familiar to the post WWI France where Dada was initially born. Rather than one specific work, Dada Here and Now is almost a mini-festival within the larger International festival, and it features many different performers working in different mediums to reappraise the Dada aesthetic for a contemporary audience. Many pieces, such as the living sculpture, will be created during the show itself, making this a fascinating glimpse not just into the artistic product but the entire creative process. The opening reception for Dada Here and Now occurs on May 26th, and the shows will continue until the 5th of June.
- It’s the Very Perry Show: Kate Perry is a rising star from the internationally enjoyed Edinburgh Fringe. Her one-person comedy consists of an absurd number of characters who range from children to cable repair people to Amish pie bakers. As she spins from sketch to sketch she keeps the audience in stitches, laughing until there’s no more breath to be taken and no more characters to embody. Performances of the Very Perry Show run from the 26th of May until the 5th of June.
- “Fire House/Waters Edge”, Performed by the HATCHlings: A unique and location-oriented performance that changes every time, “Fire House/Waters Edge” is a meditation on forces that stand opposite to one another (such as fire and water). The show is continually unexpected, nourishing, and vibrant, and is something that must be experienced to be believed. Performances begin on May 26th and run until the end of the festival, June 5th.
