Artists Selling Art at the stARTup Event at the Hotel del Sol

San Francisco is known for many things. Our vibrant nightlife, our heroic leadership role in LGBTQ+ rights, our connection to cinema. A clear umbrella for some of these topics is art in general, and it is not unfair to say that San Francisco is one of the world’s centers for artistic exploration and innovation.

While many studio artists find themselves stuck inside of the gallery system when it comes to finding people interested in purchasing their products, it is the case that many more are interested in finding alternatives to this commercial enterprise. For this reason, stARTup was founded. An organization and event that spans the country, stARTup will be making its way to San Francisco at the end of April for a whole weekend of art commerce, exploration, amusements and surprises.

This year, stARTup will happen at the eclectic and renowned Hotel del Sol. The location will only add significantly to the ambiance and atmosphere of the event as it is a motor lodge from the 1950s that has been transformed into a marketplace for artists who work primarily within tactile mediums. More than 60 different Bay Area artists will participate in this event, and each have been given the opportunity to transform an individual room of the motor lodge into their personal gallery for the weekend.

On Friday, the 26th, the event will go from 6 in the evening until 10:00 at night. On Saturday, the 27th, it will last from noon until 9:00 at night, and on Sunday, the 28th, it will go from noon until 7:00pm. The opening night event will feature guest performances as well as food and beverages provided by Cameron Hughes Wines. Tickets to the opening event are sold as general admission and are also being marketed as VIP Early Access tickets. While they come at the price of $100 per ticket, the regular general admission tickets are much more affordable and go from $10 (students and seniors) up to $30 for a full three-day pass.

Best of all, if you find yourself craving even more art after the stARTup event, you can take a short walk from the Hotel del Sol to the SF Art Market which is a massive event held every year at Fort Mason.
