Art Is A Great Part Of The San Francisco Experience
Art is an important part of the life and culture of San Francisco. From the Funk art movement of the early 20th century to the hippies in the 1960s and the modern electronic art of today, art defines the city.
A good place to experience that art culture is at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. The museum is holding the “J. M. W. Turner: Painting Set Free” exhibit. It takes place from June 20 through September 20.
British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in 1775. He was son of an English barber and a mentally unstable mother. At 15, his work was shown at the Royal Academy, and he went on to create what many consider to the some of the greatest naturalist paintings.
The exhibit features 65 oils and watercolors by Turner. It includes some of his greater known works like “The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16th October, 1834” and “Snow Storm — Steam-Boat Off a Harbor’s Mouth.” Turner was often misunderstood during his time period. The exhibit focuses on the painter’s later work and tries to establish him in the context of great European painters.
Turner’s art recently became popular with the release of the film “Mr. Turner.” The movie portrayed an eccentric artist who glowed in the fame that came from being a revered artist in his day.
The de Young Museum has been part of the life and culture of San Francisco for over 100 years. Accessing Golden Gate Park can be a challenge, especially by car. The park is located in one of the most densely populated areas of the city. The “J. M. W. Turner: Painting Set Free” is a great way to experience art in San Francisco and a limousine ride could make it the perfect outing.
