Rolls-Royce Looking into Electric-Powered Rolls Limousine
A statement released by Rolls-Royce has announced that the legendary automaker is considering production of an electric-powered limo in the near future. A recent uptick in sales of its luxury vehicles, a remarkable 171 percent in challenging economic times, and the corresponding influx of capital has inspired Rolls to explore new technologies. While the company has made no official announcement regarding when a prototype could be ready, industry watchdogs speculate that the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London is the target date. It makes sense that the world-class automaker would seek out a world-class event for maximum marketing potential. BMW has already announced that the London Games will be the coming-out party for their new environmentally friendly class of luxury cars.
The announcement did not come as a surprise as insiders have been hinting for some time that Rolls’ next big project would be a “green” limousine. However, it may surprise some readers of this blog to learn that Rolls is owned by BMW, the company that won a contract to provide 4,000 environmentally friendly vehicles for the 2012 Games. These vehicles receive very high profile publicity and are featured in many photo shoots as they transport around 80,000 Olympic officials, athletes and VIPs from lodging to venues and back again. While this is virtually guaranteed to be a huge boost for the BMW brand, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that BMW could roll out their new electric Rolls models to build that brand as well.
