San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is One of the Biggest and Most Popular Public Parks in America

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on August 4, 2014

The vast majority of people who visit San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park each year cannot imagine that this part of the city was once an uninhabitable zone of sand dunes known as the Outside Lands. Since the 1870s, the expanse of sand and dune grasses has been gradually transformed into a verdant space of trees, open spaces, recreational areas and many of the Bay Area’s most important and beloved civic treasures and institutions.

In the mid-19th Century, San Franciscans saw a need for a large public park similar to New York’s Central Park. After surveying the land and developing a plan for the space, organizers began planting 60,000 trees to stabilize the sand. In the ensuing years, nearly 100,000 more tress were planted in the park’s 1,000 acres and two windmills were built to circulate water throughout the park.

Today, residents and visitors alike get to enjoy this marvelous public space, which is one of the most-visited public parks in the country. The enduring popularity of Golden Gate Park is due in no small part to the following facilities within the Park’s borders:

  • The California Academy of Sciences
  • The de Young Museum
  • The Conservatory of Flowers
  • The Japanese Tea Garden
  • The San Francisco Botanical Garden
  • The Koret Playground and Carousel
  • The Golden Gate Park Tennis Complex
  • Stow Lake
  • The Music Concourse
  • Many other cool things to see, do and enjoy!

If you’re visiting San Francisco, it’s very likely that you’re planning on exploring one or more of the remarkable facilities listed here. After your visit, leave time in your schedule to explore other parts of the Park, as there are many other fun and interesting things to see and do and important pieces of San Francisco history to stumble upon. Although many of the facilities within the Park charge for admission (except on certain days,) entry to the Park is free and hours generally run from dawn until dusk.
