Union City, CA History

Before the history of Union City, California can be explored, the history of the three towns that made it up should be touched upon first. Alvarado and New Haven started out as port towns because they had a very close proximity to the San Francisco Bay. Alvarado was named for the Alvarado potato that was grown around there, while New Haven was nothing more than a community that was eventually consumed by Alvarado. Decoto was a small, landlocked town that became a railroad town spurred to growth by the Western Pacific Railroad that was built through the area.

The three towns had very little to do with each other until they were all incorporated into actual Union City in 1959. The town of Union City first came into being in 1850, but by 1852 was a bustling town in its own right. In the 1950’s this town was the target of many surrounding areas such as Fremont for annexation so the citizens banded together and voted for incorporation, which was a very successful movement, making Union City, California the city that it is today.
