The History of Sunnyvale, CA

Much of California was once inhabited by the Ohlone Native Americans. The area belonged to the Ohlone tribes until the 1770’s, when Spanish missionaries came to the area and began converting the Native Americans to Christianity. The first building that appeared in the Sunnyvale area was a mission built by Ohlone converts. When other settlers began to head west and settle in California, the area became a popular place for wheat farmers. Yet, in the 1870’s, it became uneconomical to grow wheat and the area was developed into small orchards and fruit canning industries.

In 1901, the citizens of the area were informed that the names they had chosen, Encinal or Murphy, could not be used as city names, so they decided on Sunnyvale for the prosperous area. Eleven years later, the city incorporated and grew at a steady pace until the World War II years, when the population boomed. This was from a combination of major technology moving into the town, and the orchards being cleared away for development into homes, businesses, and recreational areas. Today, Sunnyvale is one of the larger cities in Silicon Valley, and is home to a diverse population.
