History of Milpitas, CA

The area now occupied by Milpitas, California was inhabited by a subgroup of Ohlone Native Americans known as the Tamyen. The Tamyen tribe lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and had several villages on the land that is covered by Milpitas. When Spanish settlers came to California and the Bay Area, Milpitas was nothing more than an unnamed region that served as a crossroads between missions, but was then broken up into pieces for ranches in the area. Two ranches that were built in that period would eventually become the land that Milpitas, CA would be built upon.

In the 1850’s, the area was settled further by American settlers of German, Irish, and English decent, the names of whom are now major streets in current Milpitas. The area began to grow as a town, and in the early 1900’s, Milpitas served as a popular rest stop for the old Oakland-San Jose Highway. The city was incorporated in 1954 and fought annexation by San Jose. Milpitas also grew because there were developments by major manufacturers such as the Ford Motor Assembly Plant. The high tech industries have helped make Milpitas, California an excellent place for families and those who like city life.
