Hillsborough History

Hillsborough is a fairly young town compared to some of the others in the San Francisco Bay Area. This town was not incorporated until 1910 and did not truly exist until that point. It was founded on land purchased by the son of a wealthy shipping magnate, William Davis Merry Howard, who hailed from Hillsboro, New Jersey. Howard became a partner in a general merchandising firm in 1845, and when the California Gold Rush began, he made more money than any of the successful gold miners.

The descendants of William Howard built the town proper. The area became home to many affluent families, and while they enjoyed living in the lovely area, they were unhappy with the fact that they were paying taxes to help the cities around their homes that they did not really belong to. In 1910, the citizens of this new town filed for incorporation, and Hillsborough was officially founded. Now Hillsborough offers an escape from the noise and massive population of the big cities while maintaining strict zoning laws to ensure that the town retains its rural charm.

Carolands Chateau

One of the magnificent homes in Hillsborough is the Carolands Chateau, a manor that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as being a California Historical Landmark. The Chateau is a privately owned residence and therefore not open to the public on a regular basis. This enormous estate spans 68,000 square feet and is considered a masterpiece of American Renaissance and Beaux Arts design. If you are lucky enough to be in Hillsborough when the Carolands Chateau hosts a charity event, you can tour the historic landmark.

Filoili Center

Located close to Hillsborough in Woodside are the beautiful gardens of the Filoili Center. These gardens are one of America’s finest historic formal gardens and exist in the Filoili Center with part of the manor house built on that land as well. Visit this historic 16-acre garden and tour the beautiful flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees while enjoying the California weather.
