Hercules
Hercules is considered a “bedroom community” in California’s Contra Costa County. Most of the inhabitants of this strictly residential community commute somewhere else to get to work as it is approximately a half hour drive with traffic to either San Francisco or Oakland. With a population of approximately 21,000 people, Hercules is an excellent residential area for anyone who works in one of the larger cities and wants to commute to work. It is also a great choice for a vacation destination since it is close to many of the different areas of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Hercules History
The town of Hercules was named as such for an unusual reason. The town was established as company housing in 1881 for the California Powder Works, and the small city was named Hercules after the explosives that the company produced of the same name. The city grew slowly at first because of the powder works and the extremely dangerous nature of explosive production at the time. Fifty-nine deaths were reported in the first 40 years of the town’s existence.
After World War II, the company branched out into making less volatile things such as fertilizer, and while the town did not grow much, it prospered. In 1976, California Powder Works closed its doors, and the town of Hercules became a residential community catering to the urban sprawl that was taking over San Francisco. Developers began building new homes in the small city and Hercules became the residential town that it is known for today.
