History of Hayward, CA

The area known as Hayward, California today was once inhabited by the Costanoan Tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area for 3,000 years. In 1843, the area was awarded to Guillermo Castro. A total of 27,000 acres of canyons, hills, and flatlands would eventually become Castro Valley, California and Hayward, California. In 1852, William Hayward bought 40 acres of land from the massive estate that Don Castro owned and began building on it, adding a post office, stagecoach stop, and dairy.

The convenient ship access to San Francisco brought the freight shipping business to Hayward, California. It was then that the city really began to grow, becoming an agricultural community because of the excellent weather and soil that was perfect for growing apricots, among other fruits. After World War II, people began to flock to Hayward, CA because of the housing prices and the close proximity to larger areas where commuters could work.
