Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay, California Welcomes You!

28 miles south of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, California is a beautiful and scenic little city with a population of approximately 13,000 people. Part of San Mateo County, Half Moon Bay, CA has wonderful beaches, a downtown shopping area, and local parks to be enjoyed by anyone who comes to visit. The community is also home to roadside stands that sell local produce, and the fresh seafood on this coastal town is fresh and delicious. The weather here is ideal almost all year round.

History of Half Moon Bay, CA

In 1776, the area currently known as Half Moon Bay, CA was home to a rural agricultural area used by a Spanish Mission that had settled there. The population was mostly cattle that grazed in the area and worked with the Spanish Missionaries. At the beginning of the 19th century, the land was given out in land grants to Spanish settlers, and in 1840, it became the first real town in San Mateo County. The city went through three name changes, first being San Benito, then Spanishtown, and finally Half Moon Bay in 1847 because the community was being settled not only by the Spanish, but people from all over the world including Canada, Japan, and Italy.

The town grew very slowly despite the beautiful location, and the addition of roads and railroads in the early 20th century. The area had dense fog, and many different caves to hide in, giving it a history of rum running during the Prohibition era. A few of those areas are now restaurants with rich histories. It wasn’t until World War II that Half Moon Bay really began to grow, and now it is still the historically diverse area that it was when incorporated in 1952.

Another attraction near Half Moon Bay, CA is Purissima, California. This little town is four miles south of Half Moon Bay and is the only ghost town in San Mateo County. The town was largely abandoned before World War II, though there are no clear reasons why. It may have been the rural location or the more attractive town of Half Moon Bay, California to the north that brought the demise of the town of Purissima, California, but the town now only consists of old buildings that are always empty and a cemetery that is very hard to get to as it is now overgrown. Those who love a little adventure and like history will certainly enjoy Purissima, California when they visit Half Moon Bay.
