Danville

Welcome to Danville, CA

Danville, California is considered one of the wealthiest suburbs in the San Francisco Bay Area and part of Oakland and San Francisco proper. Yet, the amount of wealth in this town is not the attraction of Danville. It is the charm of the small population and the refusal of this area to be called a city, sticking instead with the title of town that makes Danville, California worth visiting when you are in the Bay Area. From the Iron Horse Regional Trail to the beauty of the San Ramon Valley that surrounds the town, there are several reasons why people want to live in and visit the town of Danville, CA.

History of Danville

Danville, CA began when the area of 4,000 acres was purchased by Daniel Inman and his brother Andrew with money they had earned during the California Gold Rush. This development happened in 1854 and continued until 1891 when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a spur line through the area. The town was initially a farming community, and then slowly switched to fruit and nuts as the railroad brought more of a demand for that type of produce.

In 1947, the town began developing again, this time as a residential community, as many of the other towns in Contra Costa County did when the wave of technology that characterized the 1950's hit California. Today, Danville is a town of approximately 43,000 people and has made a point of remaining a small, secluded community for people to enjoy. There are no name-brand, large chain stores within Danville, CA because of the town’s desire to remain the close community that it is.

Iron Horse Regional Trail

Those who love to go biking will enjoy the Iron Horse Regional Trail which spans 40 miles and passes through Danville as well as a number of other towns in Contra Costa County. This trail is a rail trail, which means it was once an actual railroad line that has been converted for the use of bicyclers in Contra Costa County. This trail allows people who are biking across it to view excellent and beautiful scenery including the valley ridge line and Mount Diablo. The Iron Horse Regional Trail spans two counties and nine different communities.

Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site

Danville has as much history as the rest of California, and the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site is a piece of Danville’s history. This historic site is home to the Tao House, where renowned playwright Eugene O’Neill lived. The site can be visited only when reservations are made in advance, but it has a wealth of knowledge about Eugene O’Neill’s life, including photographs, manuscripts, posters, playbills, and other memorabilia. The Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site is certainly not something to miss when you are visiting Danville, California.

Museum of the San Ramon Valley

Commemorating the history of Danville when it was still just a farming community, the Museum of the San Ramon Valley is a collection of historical photographs and artifacts that are from the 1850-1950 era of Danville’s history. This collection includes machinery built in Danville, California, and other artifacts from everyday life of the farmers who lived in the area before it became a residential community. The Museum of the San Ramon Valley also provides former ranchers every Saturday to talk to people who are interested in the agricultural history of Danville.
