Campbell History

The city of Campbell, CA, was founded by Benjamin Campbell when he came west with his family in 1846 and settled the area that is currently known as the heart of downtown Campbell. In 1851, he purchased 160 acres of land in what would eventually become known as Santa Clara County. In 1878, Mr. Campbell sold an acre of his land to the railroad for five dollars, which eventually became the starting point for the rest of the city of Campbell. Within ten years, several factories and businesses had sprung up around the railroad, and the city became known for shipping fruit, though like many other cities around the San Francisco Bay Area, it became more of a residential community when Silicon Valley began to grow and diversify.

Pruneyard Shopping Center

This 250,000 square foot shopping center is home to many different stores, as well as other attractions most malls do not offer. Campbell Historical Museum

The history of Campbell has been preserved in the Ainsley House, known as part of the Campbell Historical Museum. The Campbell Historical Museum is located within the very first firehouse of the city, which dates back to the earliest days of the city. This museum has a number of different exhibits, some of which remain in the Campbell Historical Museum at all times and some which are traveling and change so that there is always something new to see. The General Store exhibit is a permanent exhibit in the museum, and is a tribute to Campbell’s history with genuine artifacts and pictures from the city’s past. There is also a music and drama exhibit, and an exhibit all about the firefighters of Campbell’s past.
