Byron Limousines
Byron, located in Contra Costa County, is a small California town approximately one hour south of San Francisco. Despite the fact that the community falls on the lower end of socio-economic ladder, it has a rich history because of its natural hot springs. Byron is also home to Byron limousines, owned and operated by Nationwide Limousine Service. The full fleet of Byron limos stands ready to serve the entire Contra Costa County and the southern Bay Area.
Byron Hot Springs Resort & Spa
The Byron Hot Springs Resort & Spa hosted celebrities and athletes throughout the 20th century. The resort is no longer the crown jewel of its past due to a lack of resources and fiscal mismanagement. It closed its doors in 1938. The government took over the property from 1941-1945 and the property served as ‘Camp Tracy’, an interrogation camp that housed German and Japanese prisoners of war. The Greek Orthodox Church purchased the property for use as a monastery in 1946 for a paltry sum. Since then it has been sold several times and is now owned privately. Attempts to restore the abandoned resort have been unsuccessful due the extremely high cost of reconstruction. Plans for renovation are once again underway with the current owner.
Byron Airport
Studies conducted in the late 1970s and early 1980s identified the need for another airport to relieve aircraft parking and operational pressure from Buchanan Field in Concord. The county-owned Byron Airport was built in 1993 just three miles south of the Byron business district.
Uncontrolled and somewhat isolated, the airport is protected from the winds by the Diablo Range mountains. As such, it has variable winds and thermals that naturally support aerial sports. The Bay Area Skydiving Club is widely known for its drop zone at the north end of the airport. The Northern California Soaring Association is the only gliding club in the Bay Area that offers basic instruction and advanced instruction in cross country soaring. Local student pilots use the natural environmental conditions to practice their crosswind landings.
The airport is also known for its 814-acre wildlife habitat. All sorts of endangered or special-status species roam the habitat freely, namely the San Joaquin Kit Fox, the California red-legged frog, the vernal pool fairy shrimp, the California tiger salamander, the American badger, and the western pond turtle. The tri-colored black bird, the white-tailed kite, the northern harrier, the burrowing owl, and the ferruginous hawk are a few of the bird species flying about the habitat.
