Enjoy Burlingame, CA!

Burlingame has all the amenities of a relaxing suburban setting, from beautiful views to a close proximity to larger California cities. Located on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County, this small city has a population of approximately 28,000 people. Burlingame is a residential community, but it is also a popular tourist area, with a wide San Francisco Bay shoreline and several hotels along the beautiful view of the bay. Burlingame is close to the San Francisco International Airport, but this small city is still known for its very high quality of residential life, even earning the name the City Of Trees.

A Rich History

Burlingame, CA, is a town with a rich history that has contributed to its many different accolades. The town is known as the City of Trees, mostly because Burlingame has 18,000 public trees within the city limits of approximately 4.3 square miles of land. The town was named Burlingame after the honored diplomat, Anson Burlingame, came for a visit to the area in the mid-1800s. Mr. Burlingame was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as the United States Minister to China. Burlingame enjoyed the land so much that he chose a portion of it for himself, and the current owner, William C. Ralston, named it after him.

In 1893, the property began to grow as a real residential community with the building of the Burlingame Country Club and the subsequent building of a railroad station for this exclusive country club. The advent of the streetcar, specifically from San Francisco to San Mateo County, brought along more growth for the city of Burlingame. The community also grew after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake brought an influx of city dwellers into this residential area for safety. Burlingame is now home to many wealthy residents and is a popular vacation spot.

Burlingame Tourism

Burlingame has long been a traditional tourism area due to its proximity to the Bay Area. Close to not only San Francisco and the San Francisco International Airport, Burlingame has nine major hotels along the coastline, perfect for a view of the Bay Area. The Burlingame Trolley provides transportation in and around the city and its two shopping centers. Burlingame is close to San Jose, Oakland, and Palo Alto, making it an excellent choice for anyone who is interested in visiting the major cities in the San Francisco Bay Area while staying in a smaller community.
